Automating Splined Shaft Valves (such as Fisher V Ball Valves) using the QTRCO "Close Mount" Arrangement

QTRCO Rack & Gear actuators can be (and have been) used successfully to provide on/off or modulating control of Fisher splined shafted valves such as the V-Ball. Now, a newly developed "Close Mount" design has reduced the size, weight and cost of the assembly by using the outer end of the QTRCO actuator shaft to drive the valve.

Background - Fisher diaphragm actuators employ an internal lever that drives the splined valve shaft that must be of a rather long length to pass through to the outer side of the actuator. Normally, mounting an alternative actuator to the splined Fisher shaft requires locating the actuator rather far away from the valve mounting surface. A heavy, tall bracket is mandated. However, because the QTRCO Rack & Gear style actuators have hollow shafts, we find it beneficial to employ the outer end of our actuator shafts to drive the splined valve shaft. This results in a significantly shorter package without the need to modify the valve shaft.

Of course we maintain the ability to change from fail closed to fail open by simply moving the adapter to the opposite end of the actuator shaft and by turning the actuator top side down. The side of the actuator away from the valve provides a standard NAMUR interface for driving accessories.

The above photos show a QTRCO Q03DA mounted to a Fisher valve having a 1/2" splined shaft. Larger sizes of QTRCO R&G actuators will provide the 'close mount' arrangement for up to a 2" splined shaft.

When to consider QTRCO as a replacement / substitute to the Fisher actuator:
-
Space / weight savings
-
All SS control package
-
Cost Reduction
-
High vibration or seismic application
-
Corrosion
-
'On-the-valve' maintenance
