As concern for safety continues to grow, it is imperitive to know that valves relied upon to close in response to a safety related incident are reliable. PSTDs ranging from manually engaged mechanical stops to remotely activated 'smart' positioners and switchboxes are available. Each has limitations:
Manual devices are simple, but require human interaction at the valve location, discouraging frequent testing. Failure to disengage the device after testing could be catastrophic.
"Smart' switchboxes and positioners suffer from failure to positively assure against over closure during test. Also, by their very design, they permit less than 50% of the actuator torque to be applied to the valve.
